Solar and Storage Expansion to Drive Decarbonization
Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has unveiled a long-term system plan to expand clean energy in Abu Dhabi, targeting more than 35GW of solar power capacity by 2035, supported by 15GW of energy storage capacity.
Solar capacity is expected to reach 14GW by 2030 before expanding further over the following five years. EWEC is also advancing procurement of utility-scale solar projects, battery energy storage systems and reverse osmosis desalination facilities.
Carbon Emissions Targeted to Fall by More Than 45%
The plan aims to reduce combined carbon emissions from the power and water sectors from approximately 42 million tonnes in 2019 to around 23 million tonnes by 2035, a reduction of more than 45%.
The target comes as electricity demand is projected to increase by approximately 70% between 2026 and 2033, highlighting the need to expand clean energy while maintaining reliable power and water supplies.
Reducing Dependence on Gas-Fired Generation
By scaling up solar power, battery storage and energy-efficient desalination, EWEC aims to reduce the energy system’s structural reliance on natural gas.
The strategy is designed to strengthen energy and water security while supporting Abu Dhabi’s economic growth and transition toward a more diversified, resilient and lower-carbon energy system.
