Brazil’s distributed generation capacity, including rooftop solar, is projected to grow from around 50 GW in 2026 to 92 GW by 2036, according to the draft Ten-Year Energy Expansion Plan (PDE 2036), released by the Energy Research Office (EPE) under the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME).
The draft forecasts that wind and solar will account for about one-third of Brazil’s total electricity generation by 2036, while renewables will maintain a share of nearly 90% of the overall power mix.
Key projections for 2036 include:
Distributed generation: Capacity is expected to reach 92 GW, serving 13.5 million consumers and attracting BRL 96 billion in investment between 2027 and 2036.
Rooftop solar: Residential solar capacity is projected to reach 41 GW.
Rising electricity demand: Power consumption is forecast to grow by an average of 3.4% annually, reaching 979 TWh by 2036.
Energy storage: Brazil plans to deploy 7.2 GW of battery energy storage, alongside 4 GW of demand response capacity and 2 GW of pumped-storage hydropower.
Grid expansion: The country expects to add 31,900 km of transmission lines and 99,600 MVA of substation capacity between 2026 and 2036.
Brazil’s electricity generation is projected to increase from 829 TWh in 2026 to 1,133 TWh in 2036. Electricity demand from data centers is also expected to rise tenfold, from 3 TWh to 30 TWh, reinforcing the need for additional generation capacity and grid flexibility.
The draft plan estimates total investment of around BRL 3.3 trillion across Brazil’s energy sector over the planning period. Public consultation on the proposal remains open until November 6, 2026.
