China’s upstream solar market is showing signs of a price rebound, with polysilicon, wafers and TOPCon cells all recording notable increases this week. However, the rise appears to be driven more by higher quotations and expectations of market intervention than by strong underlying transactions.
Polysilicon Prices Rise, but Transactions Remain Limited
According to Shanghai Metals Market (SMM), N-type polysilicon prices increased across all major categories:
N-type recharged polysilicon: RMB 39.45/kg, up RMB 1.4/kg
N-type dense polysilicon: RMB 39/kg, up RMB 1.5/kg
N-type granular polysilicon: RMB 39.5/kg, up RMB 2/kg
Despite the higher quotations, industry tracking indicates that domestic polysilicon trading remains largely stagnant, with no significant new orders reported this week. This suggests that the latest price increases have not yet been fully supported by actual market demand.
Wafer Prices Move Higher
Silicon wafer prices also increased across all major sizes on August 13. Prices for 183N, 210RN and 210N wafers each rose by RMB 0.22 per wafer, reaching RMB 1.12, RMB 1.22 and RMB 1.42 respectively.
TOPCon Cell Prices Jump
The cell segment recorded the strongest weekly increase. Average prices reached RMB 0.29/W for M10L TOPCon cells, RMB 0.285/W for G12, and RMB 0.28/W for G12R, representing weekly increases of 9.43%, 9.62% and 7.69%, respectively. These figures are also reflected in current industry price tracking.
Market Outlook
The simultaneous increase in polysilicon, wafers and cells marks a clear shift from the prolonged downward pressure seen earlier this year. However, the gap between quoted prices and actual transaction activity remains a key issue.
For now, the market appears to be driven by expectations of supply-side adjustments and tighter industry discipline rather than a strong recovery in downstream demand. The next few weeks will be important in determining whether the price rebound can translate into genuine transaction growth and a more sustainable recovery across the PV supply chain.
