Europe’s Balcony Solar Market Gains Momentum As Energy Costs Stay High

Balcony solar is rapidly emerging as a new segment of Europe’s residential renewable energy market, driven by high electricity prices and growing demand for simple, small-scale energy solutions.

High Power Prices Drive Demand

German household electricity prices reached around €0.356/kWh in the second quarter, significantly increasing the economic appeal of self-generation. Similar price pressures have been seen across major European electricity markets.

Balcony solar systems typically combine one or two compact PV modules with a microinverter and, increasingly, a battery. With systems commonly ranging from 600W to 800W, users can generate electricity directly from balconies or exterior walls without installing a conventional rooftop system.

Policy Support and Rental Housing Boost Adoption

Germany and several other European countries have eased rules for plug-in solar systems. In Germany, systems below certain capacity limits have benefited from simplified procedures and tax incentives, while tenants have gained greater rights to install eligible balcony PV systems.

The model is particularly relevant in countries with high rental rates, where many households cannot install rooftop solar on their own.

Consumer Brands Enter the Market

The growing market is attracting companies beyond traditional solar manufacturers. DJI recently showcased a balcony solar-plus-storage system in Berlin, while companies including BULL, BYD and Anker have also expanded into residential solar and energy storage. IKEA has introduced balcony solar kits in Germany.

Traditional PV companies are also developing lightweight, plug-and-play products designed to reduce installation complexity and make residential solar easier to access.

Challenges Remain

Despite strong European interest, balcony solar still faces challenges including product costs, installation standards, building regulations and safety requirements. Some European markets are also introducing stricter requirements for electrical protection and professional installation.

As solar and storage products become more consumer-oriented, the market is increasingly shifting toward standardized products, simple installation and integrated after-sales services.
