The first phase of Ghana’s Paru Valley Solar PV Project has achieved full-capacity grid connection and officially entered commercial operation, adding new renewable generation capacity to the country’s power system.
Located near Wulugu in the Walewale area of Ghana’s North East Region, the project is planned to reach a total capacity of 100 MW across three phases. The newly commissioned first phase has an installed capacity of 16.5 MW.
The facility includes 27,104 solar panels across 64 generation units, supported by a new 161 kV substation and approximately 12 km of transmission lines. The infrastructure is designed to enable stable power transmission and reliable grid integration.
Construction teams faced a number of challenges, including difficult geological conditions, delays in design approvals, equipment supply issues and the technical complexity of connecting the project to Ghana’s main grid.
Despite these obstacles, the project reached full-capacity grid connection on August 21, 2026, completing construction 10 days ahead of schedule.
The project is expected to provide a stable source of clean electricity for communities and businesses in northeastern Ghana, helping ease local power supply pressures and diversify the region’s energy mix.
The successful commissioning also highlights the potential for large-scale solar development in West Africa, while providing experience for future renewable energy and infrastructure projects across the region.
With the remaining phases planned to expand the project toward 100 MW, Paru Valley could become an important contributor to Ghana’s growing solar power capacity and clean energy development.
