Ireland’s total solar power capacity has surpassed 3 GW, marking a rapid expansion of the country’s PV market. Ireland added its latest 1 GW in less than a year after crossing the 2 GW milestone in November 2025.
Solar generation is also reaching new highs. According to grid operator EirGrid, solar output first exceeded 1 GW in April 2026 and has since reached a record 1.3 GW, supplying more than one-third of national electricity demand during peak periods.
Rooftop Solar and Storage in Focus
The growth is spreading across both utility-scale and residential markets. More than 200,000 Irish households now have solar installations, while applications for solar support increased 76% year on year by July 2026.
With solar production continuing to rise, the industry is increasingly turning its attention to rooftop PV, battery storage and grid upgrades. Energy storage will become particularly important for shifting surplus midday solar generation to periods of higher demand.
Ireland’s cumulative renewable energy capacity has also exceeded 8 GW, supported by government programs including renewable electricity and microgeneration schemes. Solar incentives are currently planned to continue through 2030.
The Next Challenge: Integrating More Solar
Industry representatives say surpassing 3 GW is an important milestone, but the next phase will require stronger investment in electricity infrastructure and storage.
As solar penetration increases, Ireland will need to expand grid capacity and deploy more batteries to make better use of renewable electricity and maintain system flexibility.
