California-based Swift Solar announced the acquisition of the core manufacturing assets and heterojunction (HJT) patent portfolio of Swiss company Meyer Burger. The transaction also includes the transfer of Meyer Burger’s specialized engineering team and core management team, which will help Swift Solar advance the construction of gigawatt-scale production capacity in the United States.
It is understood that this acquisition establishes a vertically integrated technology pathway for Swift Solar in silicon-perovskite tandem cells. As a high-efficiency silicon cell technology, HJT serves as the ideal bottom cell for tandem modules; by stacking a perovskite layer on top of HJT cells, Swift Solar aims to break through the theoretical efficiency limit of approximately 30% for traditional crystalline silicon cells.
Upon completion of the transaction, Meyer Burger’s core management team will join Swift Solar: former CEO Gunter Erfurt and former Global Head of R&D Marcel Koenig will lead the HJT technology integration efforts.
This acquisition grants Swift Solar the most comprehensive HJT intellectual property portfolio in the Western Hemisphere, clearing patent obstacles for mass production, avoiding the patent litigation risks historically common in the thin-film and high-efficiency PV sectors, and ensuring the company’s operational freedom.
It is reported that Swift Solar has raised over $60 million in cumulative funding from investors and government agencies such as the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Defense (DOD), and will advance industrialization in phases:
Phase 1: Expand HJT production capacity by building a gigawatt-scale HJT cell and module factory in the U.S. to meet immediate domestic demand for silicon cells.
Phase Two: Integration of tandem technology, incorporating Swift Solar’s proprietary perovskite technology into mature HJT production lines to manufacture two-junction tandem cells.
Phase Three: Significant efficiency improvement, leveraging the tandem structure to increase power generation by 40% compared to conventional high-efficiency modules (20%–24%).
