Solar wafer prices have surged sharply in China, driven by stronger overseas purchasing and limited short-term supply growth.

According to the China Silicon Industry Association, the average price of N-type G10L wafers reached RMB 1.12 per piece this week, up 40% from the previous week. G12R wafers rose 26.67% to RMB 1.14 per piece, while G12 wafers increased 10.91% to RMB 1.22 per piece.

The price rally has also spread downstream. Mainstream solar cell prices climbed to RMB 0.33–0.35/W, up 23.64% week on week, while module prices edged up 1.45% to around RMB 0.69–0.71/W.

Overseas Buying Drives the Rally

The sharp increase is largely attributed to a sudden rise in overseas wafer demand.

While China's domestic solar installation market has remained relatively stable, overseas cell manufacturers have accelerated purchases amid concerns over potential U.S. tariff policies. At the same time, India's traditional peak installation season has generated additional demand for imported wafers.

This combination has created a short-term supply squeeze, reinforced by a “buy before prices rise further” mentality among buyers.

Interestingly, 183 mm wafers recorded the strongest price increase, as this format is more heavily oriented toward overseas markets. Demand for 210R and 210N wafers remains more concentrated in China.

Supply Cannot Expand Quickly

Despite the price surge, wafer manufacturers have not significantly increased production. Industry operating rates remained broadly unchanged this week, meaning suppliers have limited ability to rapidly add output.

The current rally therefore reflects a temporary imbalance between stronger demand and relatively stable supply.

Whether the price surge becomes a sustained trend will depend on how long overseas demand remains strong, whether inventories continue to fall, and how quickly wafer manufacturers can increase production.
