Thailand is accelerating its residential solar energy transition as the government prepares a new large-scale financing program to encourage households to install rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems.
According to Thai media reports, Thailand’s Energy Minister Aekniti is currently working with the Ministry of Finance to finalize the loan framework for energy transition projects, with a key focus on expanding rooftop solar adoption among households.
Previously, the Thai government launched a 5 billion baht low-interest loan program through the Government Savings Bank to support residential rooftop solar installations. The program was quickly fully subscribed due to strong public demand.
Following this success, the government is now considering an additional 30–40 billion baht ($850 million–$1.1 billion) low-interest loan package for households installing 5–10 kW rooftop solar systems. Eligible applicants will benefit from preferential interest rates, with flexible repayment options combining an initial down payment and monthly installments. Specific conditions will be determined based on each borrower’s financial qualifications.
Under current regulations, each household is allowed to install only one solar PV system, with a maximum capacity limit of 10 kW. In addition, the actual installation costs of residential solar systems can be used as a deduction against personal income tax, with a maximum deduction of 200,000 baht per household. This tax incentive is currently valid until December 31, 2027.
The new financing program is expected to support approximately 100,000 households in adopting rooftop solar solutions. After installing solar systems, households will also be able to sell surplus electricity back to the national grid at a rate of 2.20 baht per kWh.
The latest measures highlight Thailand’s strong commitment to promoting distributed solar power, reducing household energy costs, and accelerating the country’s transition toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
