Thailand plans to allocate 75 billion baht (approximately $2.3 billion) to expand its People's Solar program, aiming to support rooftop and other household solar installations for up to 1.5 million families.
According to The Nation, the funding will be divided into two phases: 50 billion baht for the initial phase covering up to one million households, followed by 25 billion baht for an additional 500,000 households. The program’s planned capacity was doubled from 5 GW to 10 GW in September 2026.
Subsidies and Long-Term Power Purchase Agreements
Eligible households could receive a 50,000-baht installation subsidy for solar systems of up to 10 kW. The government also plans to purchase surplus electricity at 2.20 baht per kWh under 20-year agreements, with exports capped at 5 kW per electricity meter.
Three state-owned banks will offer solar installation loans at an annual interest rate of 2.5%, with repayment terms of up to seven years. Revenue from electricity sales will automatically go toward loan repayment.
Grid Upgrades to Support Solar Growth
Thailand is also planning grid upgrades, including improved generation forecasting, real-time monitoring, smart meter integration and battery energy storage, to accommodate more distributed solar power.
In addition, the government has called for plans to recycle solar panels and batteries, highlighting the need to address equipment disposal as the country expands its renewable energy capacity.
