US solar manufacturer First Solar has signed a non-exclusive patent licensing agreement with CubicPV, gaining rights to use the company's US perovskite solar technology patents.
The agreement covers the development, sale and distribution of perovskite-based products in the United States, supporting First Solar's plans to target utility-scale, commercial and industrial (C&I), and residential markets.
CubicPV's technology uses a proprietary perovskite chemistry to produce ultra-thin top cells that can be combined with silicon cells in tandem solar structures. The company has shifted its focus toward commercializing silicon-perovskite tandem modules after shelving plans for a 10 GW US wafer manufacturing facility.
This is First Solar's second perovskite patent deal in 2026. In February, it signed a separate licensing agreement with Oxford PV, securing rights related to the development and US commercialization of perovskite-based solar products.
First Solar has invested more than $2 billion in thin-film research and development, including perovskite technology. Its Perrysburg, Ohio, facility already has a small-scale perovskite module development line, while a larger pilot production line is under construction and expected to begin operations in the first half of 2027.
The company expects its US module manufacturing capacity to reach approximately 17 GW by the end of 2027. The latest licensing agreement strengthens its intellectual property position as it works to bring next-generation solar technologies to commercial scale.
