Germany’s Wind And Solar Power Generation Surpasses Fossil Fuels for The First Time

Germany reached a major milestone in its energy transition in 2025, as wind and solar power generation exceeded electricity production from fossil fuels for the first time.

According to analysis based on data from the Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy, Germany generated 225 TWh of electricity from wind and solar energy in 2025, accounting for 44% of total power generation. Fossil fuel-based generation declined to 217 TWh, representing 43% of the electricity mix.

Renewable Energy Becomes the Core of Germany’s Power System

The achievement reflects two decades of growth under Germany’s “Energiewende” energy transition strategy. Rapid expansion of solar and onshore wind capacity has gradually reduced the country’s dependence on coal and other fossil fuels.

Germany is now targeting 80% renewable electricity by 2030 and aims to achieve a net-zero economy by 2045. To support this goal, the country plans to increase onshore wind capacity significantly, with annual expansion reaching record levels in recent years.

Challenges Remain in the Path Toward Climate Goals

Despite strong renewable energy growth, Germany still faces challenges, particularly its continued reliance on coal power. The country plans to phase out coal by 2038, while policymakers hope the transition can be completed earlier.

At the same time, Germany is developing new gas-fired power plants as a transitional solution, with plans to convert them to green hydrogen operation in the future to support long-term decarbonization.
