In June 2026, Iraq witnessed an important milestone in its domestic new energy development. The country's first specialized solar panel production factory was officially completed and put into operation. This factory, named "Al-Nur (Light)" and led by the Abbas Shrine, was established. The implementation of this project is a crucial step in Iraq's long-term plan for renewable energy and the localization of high-tech industries. It also laid a solid foundation for upgrading the country's energy structure and developing a sustainable economy.
Iraq heavily relies on fossil fuels for energy supply, which not only keeps the energy usage costs high but also has many negative impacts on the local environment. Compared to the construction of ordinary production lines, the establishment of this solar energy factory truly promotes the independent development of renewable energy in Iraq. According to Zia Majid Saig, the head of the Abbas Shrine Project Department, the factory focuses on the production of high-quality clean energy products. The solar panels produced by the factory can meet both civilian power supply and industrial production power consumption needs. It ensures stable and efficient power supply while effectively reducing overall energy expenses and reducing pollution caused by the combustion of fossil fuels, helping Iraq build a green and healthy economic development model and providing long-term guarantees for current and future energy demands.
This is the first solar panel manufacturing project in Iraq that operates with an intelligent model. The factory has introduced advanced global production equipment and mature technologies. All precision instruments are purchased from internationally renowned enterprises. The entire production line operates entirely with industrial automation equipment and intelligent robots, accompanied by multiple strict quality inspection procedures. It comprehensively controls the precision and quality of the products. Currently, the first phase of the factory has achieved an annual production capacity of 100 megawatts. The local area has also planned subsequent upgrade schemes, aiming to gradually increase production capacity through continuous technological innovation and equipment optimization, and continuously expand the overall scale and strength of the local photovoltaic industry.
The commissioning of this solar energy plant has received widespread attention and strong support from all sectors of Iraqi society. At the ceremony for the completion of the project, many high-ranking officials from the political and religious circles were present. Secretary-General of the Abbas Shrine Mustafa Murtada Al-Ziyad, Secretary-General of the Hussein Shrine Hassan Rashid Abaiji, and Governor of Karbala Province Nasif Jassim Hatibi, among others, all attended. Many shrine administrators and government staff also participated in the event to witness it. The high-profile commissioning ceremony vividly demonstrated the significant strategic importance of this project and also showcased Iraq's firm belief in promoting energy transformation and following a sustainable development path.
