Oman is moving forward with one of the largest solar energy expansions in the Gulf region as the country continues to diversify its power mix and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.

Nama PWP Launches Tender for Three 1GW Solar IPP Projects

Oman’s Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) has launched a tender to appoint financial and commercial advisors for the development of three utility-scale solar independent power producer (IPP) projects with a combined capacity of 3GW.

Each project will have a capacity of 1GW and will be connected to Oman’s Main Interconnected System (MIS). The projects are expected to begin commercial operations in the second quarter of 2030.

The appointed advisors will support Nama PWP throughout the project development process, including financial analysis, commercial structuring and the implementation of competitive bidding procedures.

Solar Becomes a Key Part of Oman’s Energy Strategy

The latest solar expansion reflects Oman’s broader strategy to increase renewable energy adoption and strengthen long-term energy security.

As one of the world’s leading oil and gas producers, Oman is investing heavily in renewable energy to diversify its electricity sector and support its clean energy transition. Large-scale solar projects are expected to play a major role due to the country’s abundant sunlight resources and large available land areas.

Oman Targets More Than 5GW of New Solar Capacity by 2030

The 3GW solar IPP program is part of Oman’s wider renewable energy roadmap. Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) has previously announced plans to add more than 5GW of new solar capacity by 2030.

Earlier this year, Nama PWP also began seeking technical advisors for four additional 1GW solar IPP projects, which are also targeted for completion by 2030.

Growing Opportunities for Global Solar Companies

Oman’s large-scale solar development plans are expected to create new opportunities across the global photovoltaic supply chain, including solar module manufacturers, EPC contractors, inverter suppliers and energy service providers.

With increasing renewable energy investment across the Middle East, Oman is emerging as an important solar market alongside other Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The country’s expanding solar pipeline could further accelerate regional demand for high-efficiency PV technologies and utility-scale solar solutions.
