LUSAKA, Zambia – A major milestone in Zambia’s renewable energy development has been reached as the Lunsemfwa Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project, the country’s first hydro-solar complementary facility constructed by POWERCHINA, has officially received its handover certificate. This marks the full completion of the project’s construction tasks, bringing significant benefits to Zambia’s energy structure optimization and renewable energy advancement.
Located in Zambia’s Central Province, the Lunsemfwa Solar PV Project boasts an installed capacity of 27 MW. It is equipped with a 33 kV to 66 kV substation and two 66 kV transmission lines, each approximately 1 kilometer long. Leveraging the existing infrastructure of a nearby hydropower station, the project organically integrates solar power generation with hydropower regulation capabilities. Adopting a “solar priority, hydropower regulation” model, it achieves multi-energy coordination, making it Zambia’s first new energy project built with a hydro-solar complementary approach.
The successful handover of the project further strengthens POWERCHINA’s brand influence in Zambia’s energy market. Additionally, it provides a valuable reference model for Zambia to explore the integration and development path of traditional hydropower and new energy, supporting the country’s sustainable energy transition and long-term energy security.
