Zambia has completed its first solar-hydropower hybrid project, marking an important step in the country’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and expand renewable energy development.

The 27MW Lusenfa Solar PV Project, located in Zambia’s Central Province, has officially received its completion and handover certificate. The project was developed by PowerChina and integrates solar generation with existing hydropower resources to improve renewable energy utilization and grid stability.

Combining Solar Power with Hydropower Flexibility

Unlike conventional solar projects, the Lusenfa project uses a “solar priority, hydropower adjustment” operating model. By combining photovoltaic generation with the regulation capability of hydropower plants, the project can improve power supply reliability and maximize the use of renewable resources.

The project includes a 33kV to 66kV step-up substation and approximately 1 kilometer of 66kV transmission lines, strengthening local grid infrastructure.

Supporting Zambia’s Renewable Energy Development

The project faced challenges due to its mountainous terrain, including complex land conditions and strict installation requirements. The construction team adopted customized solutions for different slopes, optimizing land use while maintaining high installation accuracy.

The project was completed and connected to the grid 26 days ahead of schedule, demonstrating efficient project management and engineering capabilities.

A New Model for Africa’s Clean Energy Future

The successful completion of the Lusenfa Solar PV Project provides Zambia with a new pathway for integrating traditional hydropower with solar energy.

As many African countries seek to increase renewable energy capacity while improving electricity reliability, hybrid renewable projects combining multiple energy sources are expected to play a growing role in supporting long-term energy transition goals.
