EU Launches €4.5 Billion T-MED Platform To Support Clean Energy Projects in The Mediterranean

The European Commission has officially launched the T-MED investment platform, backed by up to €4.5 billion in EU guarantees, to support renewable energy and clean technology projects across the Mediterranean region, including the Middle East, North Africa and Gulf countries.

The platform aims to mobilize €25 billion in public and private investment and support the development of an additional 15 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2035. Its focus includes solar and wind power, energy storage, transmission networks, cross-border electricity connections and clean technology manufacturing.

Initial projects include a €430 million hybrid solar project in Egypt, described as one of Africa’s largest, as well as two 100 MW solar power plants in Tunisia. The Tunisian projects will also receive support for associated transmission infrastructure.

T-MED will also help finance a €1.6 billion project to modernize and expand Egypt’s national electricity grid, connecting solar and wind generation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Suez regions to the national network.

Beyond financing, the initiative aims to address investment barriers such as project approvals, grid access and power purchase agreements (PPAs). It will also encourage industrial partnerships, joint procurement and local workforce training.

The launch marks a broader EU effort to strengthen clean energy cooperation with Mediterranean countries while expanding regional renewable energy capacity and supply chains.
